1. Establish the centre point of the column by dropping a plumb line on the floor. Indicated the point with an "X" for proper alignment. 

2. Place cap and base on the marked "X". Measure from the top of the cap and base to the roofline to get shaft alignment. 

3. Using a skill saw, trim excess length off of the bottom of the shaft. Rasp the end of the shaft to ensure even load distribution around the entire circumference. 

4. Prime the bottom of the column with an oil-based primer to seal the column from moisture. 

5. Apply construction adhesive to the top and bottom of the column then fasten cap and base to the bottom of the column. Make sure to countersink and predrill holes. 

6. Remove the jack post so that the load is now on the column. Pre-drill pilot holes through the base of the column. After pre-drilling is complete, fasten to secure. Apply wood putty at countersunk screw homes. (Make sure for levelness before fastening). 

FINISHING TIPS

a) Apply one coat of exterior acrylic primer

b) After drying, lightly sand column for smoothness 

c) Apply two finish coats of acrylic paint with a light sanding in between coats

*Always follow manufacturers' specifications to ensure optimum drying time.
